It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Aaron Scott Hentoff of Boston, Massachusetts. Aaron passed away on March 24, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones. His passing has left a profound impact on all who knew him and on his professional community. Aaron was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and dedicated public health professional whose life was defined by compassion, intellectual curiosity, and service to others.
Born on February 1, 1994, Aaron grew up in the Boston area, where he developed his passion for science, health, and community engagement early in life. He was a proud graduate of The Rivers School in Weston, Massachusetts, and went on to further his education with distinction. Aaron earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Brandeis University, followed by a master’s degree from the Yale University School of Public Health — accomplishments that laid the foundation for his impactful career in public health research and microbial sciences.
Aaron’s professional journey led him to serve as a microbiologist with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, where he devoted his talents to studying vector‑borne diseases and improving community health outcomes. His work was marked by a steadfast commitment to public welfare and scientific excellence, earning him the respect of colleagues and the broader public health community.
More than his career, Aaron was known for his authentic spirit and vibrant personality. He had a deep love for live music, dancing, and community involvement. Aaron was passionate about politics, celebrated diversity, and was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts — especially performances that uplifted and united people. He approached life with joy, curiosity, and unwavering authenticity, qualities that endeared him to so many.
Aaron is survived by his loving family: his father Steven Hentoff, his sister Dasha Solomon (Rob), his brother Jacob Hentoff (Patrick), and his cherished nephews Ari and Jack. He was predeceased by his mother, Ami Hentoff. Aaron’s faithful companion, his dog Sookie, also survives him and carries on the warmth of his memory.
A graveside service to honor Aaron’s life was held at Beit Olam East Cemetery, 42 Concord Road, Wayland, MA, on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 11:00 am. Shiva was observed following the service at the home of Steven Hentoff, where friends and family gathered to celebrate Aaron’s life and legacy in community and shared remembrance.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requested that donations be made in Aaron’s memory to the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at the Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute, a cause meaningful to the family and reflective of Aaron’s lifelong dedication to health, science, and humanity.
Aaron’s life was a testament to passion, perseverance, and empathy. His contributions to public health and the lives he touched through his friendships, advocacy, and community engagements will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
